After cruising through two victories away from home, on December 7th the Spartans came up against their cross-town rivals: Brookfield Central.

One of the most highly anticipated matchups of the season started with intense back-and-forth play. Both teams proved that they were full of talent. Coming into the game, it was known that the Spartans are now limited as far as their size.

Brookfield Central’s David Joplin (10) exploited this early on, towering over defenders and asserting his dominance – he scored 11 points in the first six minutes of the game. Brookfield East had no answer for him; however, they were able to hit their shots at the opposite end of the court to keep up with the Lancers.

By the end of the first half, the Spartans were able to lead the Lancers by one point, paving the way for an exciting second half of play.

Central’s Gage Malensek (12) came to life in the second half. Similar to Joplin in the first half, the Spartans were unable to contain him. He finished with a total of 22 points and lived up to the hype surrounding his name. His offense, along with the help from a few of his teammates, allowed for the Lancers to pull away and secure a wide-margined victory.

Shots were not falling for the Spartans, and they were unable to keep up with their opposition, despite putting in the effort.

In the end, it must be noted that Joplin, Malensek, and Cole Nau (12) combined for 54 of the Lancers’ 60 points. Based on their performances, the Spartans will know that for next time, containing these three players will be key to a victory.
