The Brookfield Barracudas came up short to Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial High School (CMH) in a dual meet at Brookfield Central High School. The meet was close with a final score of Waukesha South/CMH: 99, Brookfield Barracudas: 87.

Although the Barracudas didn’t win they had a very strong performance from their divers. Michael Penney (10) led the way scoring 222.55 total points beating second-place finisher Dylan Wendt (10) by 56.1 points. Wendt scored 166.45 points giving the Barracudas the two top finishers as the team went on to win the event.

Although the divers had a strong showing, the swimmers failed to do the same.

The only event a single swimmer for the Barracudas managed to win was the 100-yard backstroke as Michael Long (10) tied for first with a time of 53:59. The Barracudas managed to win this event, scoring 2 more points than Waukesha South/CMH.

The 100-yard butterfly looked to be another strong event for the Barracudas as they showed strength in numbers.

While no one took first place, they still managed to secure second place as Nicholas Elwing (12) had a time of 54:31, third place as Jonathan Day (10) swam a 59:11, and fourth place as Abhinay Reddy (9) had a time of 1:08.17. The Barracudas managed to win this event by 2 points.

The Barracudas kept it close by tying in many events, like the 50-yard freestyle. Ido Korabelnikov (12) swam a 23.13, getting second in the event. AJ Smith (12) was also able to tie in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.84, securing a second-place finish.

In the 100 yard freestyle, the Barracudas also tied as Korabelnikov finished with a time of 50.44 again getting second place with Smith barely finishing behind him with a time of 50.56 and Ben Schroeder (12) swam at 53.39.

While the Barracudas had strong performances individually, they struggled to win a single event, losing by a total of 10 points.

After the meet, Smith said, “Waukesha South has always had great swimmers like Caleb and Carlson; we knew this was going to be a tough battle. We were glad we kept it close and our goal is to win where it matters at Sectionals and State.”

The Brookfield Barracudas were undefeated in all dual meets leading up to this one. A week later, on January 16, the Barracudas bounced back taking down Arrowhead by a convincing 18 points. With 3 more meets left to go, the Varsity conference swim & dive meet, the WIAA Sectionals, and 2020 WIAA State Meet approaching, the Barracudas are hoping for more victories to come.
