Wisconsin’s winter was off to a slow start this year but has quickly picked up this week. In response to the National Weather Service’s warning about the heavy snowfall, Elmbrook Schools has announced two snow days. Being the first two snow days of the academic year, Elmbrook has not mandated a shift to virtual learning. However, with the end of semester one being a week away, several students express mixed feelings about school being canceled.
Some teachers have decided to continue to assign work during the snow days. Sarah Grewal (10) mentions that her math teacher assigned almost two hours of videos to review. “I spent some time relaxing, but I had a lot of math homework to do. It makes sense though since finals are a week from today”.
While some teachers have been able to compensate for lost time, others are resorting to cutting out material. Samika Sabesan (11), an AP Chemistry student, explains, “Although it’s nice to not have school, the snow days have heavily pushed back the curriculum for AP Chem. A lot of us are nervous for next week, especially since the FRQ part of our final has been taken out”. AP Chemistry is notorious for its difficulty and fast pace. Adjustments to the final exam have made students increasingly worried about the consequences on their grades and understanding of course material.
On the other hand, many students have found the snow days to be an opportunity to relax and unwind. Mary Swietlik (12) happily shares her experience with the cancellation of school: “I went sledding with my younger siblings, and had a lot of fun! If the weather is right, I might go sledding again tomorrow”. Being out of the classroom also provides an opportunity for students to catch up on missing work and study on their own. “Most of my classes are just giving us time to review for the finals. Having a break from class just means I get more time to focus and study, without worrying about having to drive to school or go to clubs after school” Hasini Manne (10) explains.
It goes without saying that the timing of both snow days is not the most advantageous for students and teachers alike. Despite the inconvenience, it is crucial to adapt to these circumstances to ensure a successful end to the first semester. As finals approach, tomorrow’s snow day, and the long weekend provide a precious opportunity to study, relax, and enjoy the weather.
