The end of a year often marks the start of many New Year resolutions. While they can wildly range from academics to health, many aspire to become more engaged with their global community-especially given its ever changing nature. For the ladder, one option that will appeal to many is Model United Nations. I interviewed Emily Penney, Secretary of the BEHS’ Model UN Executive Board, to understand the essence of the club and what they aim to accomplish.
What is Model UN’s purpose?
Model UN’s goal is to simulate global diplomacy. Members take on the roles of countries, working together to create resolutions for worldwide problems. Much, similar to what the actual United Nations does. Essentially, we play out world politics on a local scale.
What makes Model UN unique?
There is no other club like Model UN; you gain skills that are wholly central to Model UN (e.g. learning about public speaking, world politics, and working with a team). The problems occurring halfway around the globe have a direct impact on our lives, country, and communities. Through Model UN, students delve into global issues, representing countries other than their own and proposing solutions in committees. The experience helps them develop essential skills in public speaking, writing, and research.
What are some challenges you’ve encountered in helping run your Model UN club?
It can be hard to find people who are willing to join the club because it seems like a complicated premise. I often hear “uhhh I don’t know that much about politics” or “that sounds really hard.” Although Model UN can seem daunting in the end it is supposed to be a learning experience. However, if you show up and engage in a couple meetings then you’ll see it’s really fun and we are here to train you and guide you every step of the way.
Has BEHS’ Model UN club had any notable achievements?
I am proud of the growth our club has had over the past three years, It started out with just around 10 people in Mr.Zielder’s room every other week and now we work with a roster of around 48 delegates! We’ve been able to attend more conferences and take pride in the fact that our members have consistently received awards at one.
Additionally, we are excited to announce that we are partnering with Oconomowoc’s delegation to host our own conference at Brookfield East this year!
What are your goals for the future of the club?
We’re excited to grow our club and participate in more out-of-state and overnight conferences next year as well as expand Brookfield East’s own conference! Our goal is to increase our team size so that more students can not only participate in Model UN but also become well-versed in our global geopolitical landscape.
Because the season is year-round, it’s never too late in the year to join! You are always welcome at our meetings every Wednesday after school from 3:15-4:00 in Mr. Zeilder’s room (Room 137).
