Why Getting Marquettes Oliver-Maxence Prosper Was a Good Move for the Dallas Mavericks

2023 NBA 21st Overall Pick received jersey after being traded to the Mavericks.

The Dallas Mavericks found a long-time player during this year’s draft when they acquired Forward Oliver-Maxence Prosper. The 21-year-old stands at 6’8 and is 215 pounds. Selected by the Sacramento Kings, he is the 24th player overall out of Marquette.

The Mavericks have been searching for Oliver Max (otherwise known as O-Max), since the end of the last season. He is sure to play a significant role on the team. Despite his young age, O-Max has both height and excellent athleticism, making him the perfect fit for the Mavericks roster.

While O-Max can play the 3 or 4 positions that fellow first-round selection Derek Lively Jr, who was picked 12th overall stands at 7-1 230 lbs, he has well-developed defense around the rim and in the paint allowing him to the 4 or 5 spots. With Christian Wood at the five and Doncic and Irving (If he sticks around) at the 1 and 2. This well-rounded line-up will undoubtedly be a championship-contending roster in coming years if they can keep players and develop their rookies to their fullest.

O-Max will most likely be coming off the bench to start the season. He can shoot 65% at the hoop and 34% behind the arc. His shot-blocking skill, in particular, is low for someone his size. While he has a 7-1 wingspan, his ability to get to the ball and swat it is currently underdeveloped.

In the coming years, O-Max will be a starter in play-off rotations and start and wrap up games as a solid defender that teams will have to try to work around, his game will develop into him being a definite role player and possibly a star in the league at some point of his career.
