In 2007 the Green Bay Packers selected kicker Mason Crosby in the 6th round, 193rd overall. Sixteen years later, he is ranked 11th in most points scored in NFL history (1,918 points) and has averaged 7.4 points throughout his career.
Mason Crosby is now 38 and a free agent after playing 16 seasons in a Packers uniform. However, his future as a Packer is looking much darker.
At the end of the 2022 season, Crosby’s contract expired making him a free agent. When the draft rolled around, the Packers drafted Kicker Anders Carlson in the 6th round, 207th overall. Moving Crosby further away from the job. Crosby still wasn’t signed at the start of training camp, nor at the start of preseason. As of August 29, the deadline for the 53-man roster, Crosby is still not on the team.
Anders Carlson, brother of pro bowler Kicker Daniel Carlson, is 6 ‘5’ and 218 lbs. His training camp and preseason performances were nothing to worry for Packer fans and led Head Coach Matt LaFleur to decide Carlson would be their Kicker moving Crosby out of the picture.
Crosby still has gas left in the tank after scoring 86.4% on field goals (~5% higher than his average) and 94.9% on extra points (~2% lower than his average). One option is the Dallas Cowboys, who cut their Kicker, Brett Maher, after a playoff meltdown that led the Cowboys to elimination from the playoffs. The Cowboys signed Tristan Vizcain but cut him in training camp after he made only 22 out of his 35 attempted field goals. Now all they have left is 28-year-old Brandon Aubrey and in his pre-season performance he was not promising after coming over from the USFL. Head Coach Mike McCarthy who coached the Packers and Mason Crosby from 2006-2018, joined the Cowboys after the Packers. He and the kicker have a good relationship and won a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers under center. If McCarthy and the Cowboys get into trouble, there is no reason they will turn to Crosby to do it for America’s Team.
